Transgender Folk Serving in the Military

July 27, 2017

The reason many called the draft dodging #tabloidpresident‘s tweets about transgender military service members a “distraction” is because they’re not policy, they have no legal standing.

They were a deliberate attempt to distract media, voters, and the resistance — primarily from his collusion, crimes, and treason but also from the travesty of the GOP attempt to take health care away from millions of Americans to give tax breaks to the 1% — and to pander to his base, where they generated the ego stroking agreement he was seeking.

Even many GOP in Congress, especially those who are veterans, have taken a stand against his position. And, “the Pentagon has made no change yet to its policy on transgender service members.”

Far more concerning — and garnering far fewer headlines/outrage but with actual legal repercussions — is an amicus brief filed at the US Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit which claims that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 banning sex discrimination does not cover sexual orientation.

That is an attack designed to force every LGBTQ American back in the closet to keep their jobs.

I don’t think there’s an intentional implication that assailing the rights of transgender folk is a “distraction”. Unfortunately, there’s plenty of evidence (“bathroom” bills) that we need to stay vigilant in the fight for those rights. But the raving tweets of a narcissistic lunatic are not what we should be watching. It makes for good headlines/clickbait, but it’s not actual policy.

Instead, we need to vigilantly monitor his racist, homohating, misogynist appointments desperately trying to reverse every inch of progress made in the past several decades and to the regressive legislation proposed in Congress and the ALEC-owned state legislatures. Therein lies the danger to the civil rights of everyone who isn’t a white, cis, christianist male.

“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain”. He is a puppet and A̶L̶E̶C̶  the GOP will get rid of him when he no longer serves its agenda.
